Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I am going to use my 20- plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video we will be showing you how to replace the grille on this 2001 Jetta. It's the same process for any '99 to '03 Jetta and the only tool you need is a flat-blade screwdriver, and if you're replacing your grille, consider replacing your headlights. Here's the before and then you can see by this after, replacing your headlights can take a lot of miles off the front end of your car.
First, we're going to open the hood. There is a little tab it's actually broken on this car, but you can push down with your screwdriver right there and then pull this forward. Next on each side you're going to want to just pull up this way and then push in here and up. Do the same thing on the other side, pull out this way and up and up. Now the grille is loose. Then the last thing you need to do is pry up on this little clip and then using your screwdriver, now your grille is off.
To remove the VW emblem, what you want to do is you want to take your thumb and push and pry up on this and then push the emblem through. You're going to keep pushing and then pry on the other side. Then, keep pushing and it comes out. Then also, you'll want to remove this part. Simply, you're just going to pry these teeth and from this side finish prying it up and off, so then you can transfer that to your new grille.
The replacement grilles we sell at 1AAuto.com do come in black and most replacement grilles do come in black. If you want to paint them to match, what you want to find is an auto parts store that has a paint department, and what they can do is they can mix up, based on the color code, and they will be able to tell what color code is on your car. Based on that color code, they will mix you up some paint and then they will put it into an air-charged canister and you can just kind of use that like a spray can.
Now I'm going to put this back in. It's just kind of a matter of- Obviously you want the red arrow to be up and it goes right in. What I do is I take my screwdriver and I kind of get the grille going at this clip like this, reach in here, twist the screwdriver and wrap your finger around it. Got that on. Push the clip down. Now you want to put the bottom of your grille in first. Then you want to hold these, keep them like that. Make sure your bottom is in and then clip the center in.
