In this video, we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0-liter, 5-speed, automatic transmission. We're going to be showing you how to remove and replace your output speed sensor on your transmission. Again, this is specific to the 5-speed.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: T-30 Torx bit, ratchet, flat blade screwdriver, rust penetrant, and automatic transmission fluid
Your transmission output speed sensor or OSS is located at the backside of the transmission. The top on the driver's side, right where it bolts to the transfer case on these 4-wheel drive models. We'll start by removing the electrical connector. Remove the T30 Torx screw on the back of the sensor with a T30 Torx bit and a ratchet. These also have a 10mm hex on the outside, but ours has a good bit of rust and corrosion on it. We weren't able to get it to turn with the socket. Then you should be able to grab the sensor and work it side to side a little, to help release it from the case. However, you may need to use a long flat blade screwdriver to try to pry up on it.
Here we have our old output speed sensor that we removed from our vehicle and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, these parts have the same sensor on the end. The same two-pin electrical connector and the same single point mounting location on the side here. Our old one is actually cracked a little bit. Also comes with a new O-ring on it to seal it into the case. There's no gasket or sealant needed required here. If you have a check engine light or another issue related to your output speed sensor on your automatic transmission, this new part from 1A Auto is going to go in direct fit, just like your original equipment and fix you up right.
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with some penetrating oil or the proper automatic transmission fluid for the vehicle. Seat it in fully. Be sure to feel for where the opening is for the bolt to keep it aligned. Reinstall your T30 Torx screw into the back of the speed sensor with a T30 Torx socket. Just be sure to watch it and make sure that the whole sensor is in properly and that you aren't just pulling one side down, otherwise you risk breaking the sensor. If yours looks like it's going in crooked, you may need to apply a little more lubrication to it. Once the sensor's reinstalled, reinstall your electrical connector and you're good to go.
