In this video, we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your driver's door lock cylinder. This item is sold as a pair, and the passenger side is going to be very similar to how we do this on the driver's side.
If you like this video, please click subscribe. We have a ton more information on this truck, as well as many other makes and models. If you want this part for your vehicle, it's available from 1AAuto.com. You can follow the link down in the description.
There are no tools required for this repair.
On the inside edge of your door, there's this black tab, which is actually a lock that slides through and keeps the lock cylinder engaged to the door. You can work that out with your fingers and remove it. Then remove the lock cylinder from the door. Angle it the right way. You can get the lock rod out with it. Remove the cylinder. Be careful not to allow this to fall back into the door.
Here we have our old part that we removed from our truck and our new part from 1AAuto.com. While this part is sold in a kit, the process to remove them is the same. The driver's side, as well as the passenger's side, are identical. As you can see, we have the same arm with the same clip for our lock actuator rod. We have the same size cylinder. The lock plates look a little bit different, but it's this slot at the front that matters because that's what the spring engages to to keep these in place. It’s about the same on the bottom there too. Again, it looks a little different, but this is the part that matters here.
The cylinders also come with a new pair of keys, so you can re-key both sides of the truck, and have one key for both doors and one key for the ignition. If your old lock cylinder is worn out and not functioning, not turning, or it's bound up and won't lock and unlock the vehicle properly, this new part from 1A Auto is going to go in direct fit, just like our original equipment on both the driver's and the passenger's side. We can fix you up right.
We install the clip over the lock rod. It goes into the first bend there. Work it back into the door. Line up the four tabs. Push in on the lock cylinder while re-installing this retainer.
Check for proper operation of your new lock cylinder. Do this with the door open, and check by watching the movement of the lock itself here at the top of the door. You do this with the door closer, and it doesn't work, you're going to lock yourself out of your truck. Locked. Unlocked. We're good to go.
