The brown end is where the electrical connector connects to it. The small holes in the middle of the silver part of the outlets is where the cap snaps on(if your old one has one or if want to put it on the new one). Whatever procedure you need to do to get the current one out of your car, you simply do the reverse when you put the new one in.

On my S 10 Blazer I first pulled the ash tray out. Then went behind the ashtray and followed the wire to the old Power outlet. I then twisted it out of its mount Then pulled it back through where the ash tray was. The old one screws out and the new one screws in. installation is the reverse of removal. Remember to disconnect the negative battery cable before doing any electoral work.
