A Family Vehicle: The First Sienna
The Sienna is Toyota’s premier minivan for the North American market that offers plenty of comfort and space for a family vehicle. It’s the only minivan that offers all-wheel drive and features some key innovations that separate it from the rest of the pack. However, the first models that appeared in late 1997 are different from their successors. The 1998 model year Toyota Sienna follows the more classic minivan styling with an aerodynamic form and a bubble-like rounded back. They were smaller than the current generation, sat seven passengers, and sported a 3.0L V6 with 210 horsepower. They featured two sliding doors and one that became power-operated in 1999. The seats were fold down and removable with seatback trays, and there were plenty of storage compartments.
The Sienna Evolves
In 2003, the second generation Sienna grew in size and bumped the engine up to a 3.3L V6 that could kick 230 horsepower. It was featured on a new chassis that extended to a four inch track and increased the wheelbase by five inches. Eight-passengers became an option (CE and LE trims only) with middle bench seats that helped place the Sienna above the competition. Safety standards were increased by including side air-bags as a standard feature in 2006. Trim levels were the same as the previous generation: CE, LE, XLE, with the addition of the XLE Limited (the XLE prefix was removed in 2006 to avoid confusion). For the latter half of the generation, the engine performance was increased with a 3.5L V6 that could reach 266 horsepower.
2010 marked the beginning of the current generation for the Sienna. It still features the same 3.5L engine, as well as a 2.7L 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower. The Sienna also comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. There is an optional all-wheel drive version, but it comes with slight setbacks such as the lack of power folding seats and a spare tire. The interior, however, is very luxurious depending on the trim. The XLE features a half-wood half-leather steering wheel with wood trim and soft arms rests. The chairs are built in comfortable top-class leather with reclinable captain seats that feature a leg rest to give an ottoman-like feel. There’s also a rear sunroof, power outlets, climate control, sliding cup holders, an upper and lower glove box, voice command, rear entertainment, power doors, and more. The trunk has an increased space for cargo capacity that features rear folding seats. Trim levels come in L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. With its easy and maneuverable seats and updated lavish interior, the Sienna is a vehicle that is suitable for transporting cargo as well as driving in comfortable long trips.
