Need Plymouth Laser Parts?
Despite a short life of only five years, and a lack of sales success, the Plymouth Laser was certainly different from any other vehicle Plymouth was selling in the very late 1980’s and into the first few years of the 1990’s, when it roamed the road. The Laser was the most performance-oriented vehicle Plymouth had come out with since its classic line of muscle cars in the 1970’s. Virtually identical to the Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Laser did feature slightly more upscale styling which was intended to help set it apart from the other two. Unfortunately it didn’t and the model was sent to the big ole’ junkyard in the sky after just a few years. Even though the car is no longer being produced, the need for parts still remains. Even with a car like the Laser, wear and tear of parts will ultimately occur. Luckily, 1A Auto provides premium Plymouth Laser aftermarket replacement parts to replace your worn and broken OEM parts. The Laser Lights Up
Manufactured alongside the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon, the Plymouth Laser was a product of Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) - a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Founded in the mid-1980s, the Diamond-Star Plant opened in 1988 and began manufacturing the Laser, Eclipse, and Talon all on the same platform. Chrysler handled the aesthetics while Mitsubishi handled the mechanical parts, and the result spawned three sporty coupes that were indisputably similar to each other.
The Laser Shines, and then Fades Away
In an attempt to make an affordable car that could connect with the youth, the first car from DSM was the Plymouth Laser. It debuted in 1990 with three trims: the Laser-Base, the RS, and the RS Turbo. The base trim offered a 1.8L, eight-valve inline 4-cylinder engine with 90 horsepower, while the RS offered a 2.0L, sixteen-valve inline 4-cylinder engine with 135 horsepower. Anyone looking for that extra boost could snag the Laser RS Turbo with its 2.0L 4-cylinder engine capable of 190 horsepower. A two-door, four-seat, front-wheel drive coupe available as a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic, the Laser could rip with its rare turbocharged intercooled engine on its highest trim - just like its counterparts. The Laser was the lightest version of these three cars, and it didn’t offer an all-wheel drive version until the 1992 model. It was still fast for a Plymouth, though, capable of shredding up to 60 mph under seven seconds.
In 1994, without making it to a second generation, the Laser was discontinued. Some of the improvements over its five-year-stint include a 5 horsepower boost on the RS Turbo, all-wheel drive, a smaller 13G turbo for the automatic and a 14B turbo for the manual, antilock brakes, optional leather seats for the RS, and the switch from pop-up headlights to a slimmer composite style. Though the Laser struggled to survive, it’s considered a rarity today, and that isn’t a bad trade.
