Overview
Infiniti is a division of Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company and represents their foray into the world of luxury automobiles. The Infiniti marque was formally introduced in Japan in 2013, with the first Japanese-market Infiniti vehicle to be a hybrid-powered variant of the Infiniti Q50. Prior to this, Infiniti models had direct equivalents in the Japanese domestic market Nissan lineup.

Origin and Initial Struggles
Launched initially in North America, Infiniti vehicles appeared in the United States for the first time in 1989 as a competitor to Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura premium brands. The Infiniti brand of cars was launched with the introduction of two models: the Q45 and the M30. A third model—the Infiniti J30—followed not long after, and, in 1997, its first entry into the SUV market segment—the QX4—was released. However, Infiniti vehicles were initially not well received. Sales were slow and by the mid '90s the brand fell behind both Lexus and Acura. This downward trend continued, and, by the end of the decade, the floundering brand was without sales, an image, or a following.
The Turnaround
With the year 2000 now upon it, Infiniti was facing extinction. The company regrouped and began dedicating itself to building a new lineup of sport luxury vehicles. The G35 sports sedan was introduced for the 2003 model year and it provided the boost the company needed. Infiniti sales began to improve and consumers and industry buffs began to catch wind of Infiniti's powerful engines and refined interiors. The G35 eventually ended up winning Motor Trend's “Car of the Year” in 2003, and was also on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list for 2003 and 2004.
The FX35/45 crossover soon followed and continued the momentum created by the G35. The G series line of vehicles helped to re-define the image of the brand. Infiniti automobiles were now being likened to and aimed directly at BMW, as both brands emphasize performance in a luxury package. The M35/M45 also was a big hit and was named the best luxury sedan by Consumer Reports. In 2008, the brand expanded outside of North America and into Europe. In 2013, the brand was introduced in its homeland of Japan with the first vehicle, a hybrid-powered variant of the Infiniti Q50, going on sale in 2014. Prior to this introduction, Infiniti models had direct equivalents in the Nissan lineup that were sold in Japan. The reasoning behind this move was to make Infiniti more separate and distinct from its parent company, and give it name recognition in its home market.
Infiniti Today
Infiniti continues to produce high performance luxury cars (coupe, sedan, and convertible), crossovers, and SUVs. Newer Infiniti models are equipped with fuel efficient engines, all-wheel drive, satellite navigation, and Bluetooth capabilities. Priced to compete with other import luxury vehicles BMW, Acura, and Lexus, Infiniti has some tough competition. However, reserved styling hides deceptively impressive sport performance, giving Infiniti an edge on the crowd. Moving toward the top of the pack in just two decades, Infiniti continues to be a marque to watch for sport-luxury automobiles.
