Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear differential cover on this 2006 Jeep Liberty. It's the same part and process on these Liberties from 2002 to 2012. The items you'll need for this are a new rear differential cover from 1AAuto.com, a 13 millimeter socket and ratchet, a flat blade screwdriver, a razor blade, a torque wrench, a drip pan, RTV, and approximately two quarts of gear oil.
Your rear differential is located right here. To remove the cover, it's a series of 13 millimeter bolts. We're going to start off just removing these bottom three. We'll just fast forward as Don does this. Now, you want to loosen the rest of those 13 millimeter bolts. Now, using a flat blade screwdriver, pry out on the rear differential cover and make sure you have a drip pan underneath to collect all the oil. You want to make sure you let it all drain out. When it's slowed down you can just remove the rest of those bolts. Now, carefully pry off the differential cover. Using a razor blade, scrape off all the remnants of the old gasket.
On the right, is the old differential cover; on the left, is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical and will amount exactly the same. Now, take some RTV and you want to just circle around each hole and go all the way around the entire differential cover. You want to make sure that there are no gaps, so that it's going to make a good seal. Now push your rear differential cover back into place. Replace those 13 millimeter bolts and tighten them up. Torque each of those bolts in a crossing pattern to 30 foot-pounds.
Use a flat blade screwdriver and pry off this fill cap and then fill it up with the gear oil required for your vehicle. It's filled up to the right point when it starts overflow. Then just push in your cap and you're all set.
