Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the turn signal switch on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. It's the same part and similar process on these Mountaineers from 2002 to 2005. The items that you'll need for this is a new turn signal switch from 1A Auto.com, a Phillips screwdriver, a flat blade screwdriver, 7mm socket and ratchet, and a 7/32 socket or a 5.5mm socket.
Remove these two 7mm bolts. Move your steering wheel up, and then pull this panel straight back and towards you. Then remove these two Phillips screws. Now, pull the panel down on both sides. It'll unclip. Then you can pull that forward, and then you just want to remove this Phillips screw right here. Pull this grommet up and out, and then lift this panel up.
Then, you can access this 7/32 bolt right here. Let's go ahead and remove that. Now just push in this tab and the switch will pop up so you can push it out the rest of the way. Then you want to disconnect these harnesses. For this first one, it's easiest if you use a flat blade screwdriver and just pry it free from the switch. You can see there's a tab on the bottom, and it just unclips. Then just push the tab on the harness and disconnect it. Do the same thing with these two. Then your switch is free and you can just pull it out of that plastic cover.
Up top is the old switch; below it is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical and they will fit exactly the same.
Now, just feed the switch back through that plastic cover and reconnect your harnesses. You can just push that harness back onto that clip and reconnect it. This tongue and this tongue here go into these grooves, so you want to put it down in place. I'm actually pulling forward on it as I slide it down in. We'll fast-forward as he tightens that bolt up.
Now, put your top back in place, and you can see right in here. Just make sure that this comes down and none of the wires get out of place. This should be down, and on the other side it's down as well. Now, replace this Phillips screw. Feed that panel back into place making sure your wires are out of the way, and then just reclip it.
Push this grommet back down into place until it clips back in. Then, push this side of that lower panel back up. Now, replace those two Phillips screws. Then push this panel straight back into place. Replace those two 7mm bolts, then you're all set.
We hope this video helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Please feel free to call us toll-free, 888-844-3393. We're the company that's here for you on the Internet and in person.

I used this item on our 2002 Ford Explorer. This item is built solid and works perfectly. I watched the install video and then went to work. The entire process took less than 10 minutes. Shipping was quick. The package shipped same day and arrived within three days. I will be ordering all of my parts from here.
The Turn Signal had issue with clicking back after turn
Ricardo
January 25, 2017
All the functions of the switch work, except the return click once a turn has been made so that was an issue, however it is too much work to pull it out again and send it back so I am living with it. If anyone else buys it check to make sure that the switch returns to center position after the wheel turns and the turn is complete. I am just dealing with it right now.
Won't reset

i bought a turn signal lever two weeks ago for my son. He installed it. Did not tell me it would not turn off after a turn. I drove the car a week later to find this problem. Talked with a 1A rep. I was completely surprised. They are sending me a new part without the hassle of returning the bad part .
i will refer and be back for other parts. Thank you
Good enough

The best part was the detailed video of the installation. Part fit well, easy to install.
However, arm does not go back to regular position after a right turn. The arm clicks but does not move back.

Very good service, especially the tutorial for the installation of the switch. 100% will recommend to friends and associates. Thank you.
I had never purchased an item from 1A Auto and am always cautious with ordering parts from new places online. But, after first discovering their easy to follow tutorial on YouTube, and seeing the positive reviews, I decided to give it a go. With my hubby's help, we installed it and everything works great! A mechanic would never offer free video tutorials (for obvious reasons) so its a great marketing plan to sell parts AND show customers how to do it themselves. Thanks!
Wow!

I ordered the part on Saturday. I had it by Wednesday. Thought I wouldn't see it til Friday. Got it installed. It does everything my broken turn signal did plus more. I would have done this sooner but I'm glad I waited for the part I needed and the great service.
Would buy again

Part arrived in a timely fashion. I did receive the correct part. The only issue I ran into was that the turn signal doesn't want to turn it's self back off. Everything else works well. I got the product at half the price this way. So it is all good.

0 stars for product 2 stars for service.
This product is available for $20 less on amazon and ebay. I read the reviews on the auction sites and learned of the right signal auto return issue.
I expected the part to be of better quality than the "cheap" sites based on 1A's reputation and $20+ premium I paid.
First part arrived in 5 days and I installed it in about an hour (disassembling and reassembling the steering column = 80% of the time) The part was faulty as the right signal will not return automatically.
Asked for a replacement guaranteed to work and shipped overnight. The part arrived next day as promised. Installed the part again with the same result. Right signal does not return to center automatically.
If you are planning to buy this part save $20 and get one that doesn't work for a cheaper price.

Look through the reviews and see how many people have issues with this part. I know this isn't an OEM part so I figured it might not last as long as the original but I still thought it would all work to start with. The problem is the right turn doesn't cancel after making the turn, and even though this is a mechanical issue it is an electrical part so they wont take return on a electrical part that has been taken out of the box or installed. So if saving 100 dollars to not have your right turn cancel is worth it, this is the part for you.
Perfect!

The original one came damaged so 1A Auto replaced it. I have installed it but it works poorly. Has an issue that activates the wipers when you use the turn signal feature. Very poor quality and unreliable component.

Fairly easy to swap out.
Nice installation video.
But like others have mentioned in their reviews, the turn signals do not cancel after making a turn.

I'm not thrilled with this. Left turn works fine but the right turn doesn't cancel. Old switch worked fine. At least the truck has the buzzer when the signal is left on too long. This was bought because the high beam switch stopped working. This works fine on the new one.
Signal deactivation problem.

January 27, 2024
Installation was easy. Good video tutorial. I do have a problem with the unit. The signal won't turn off after completing a turn. The "ratchet" effect from the device that should turn the signal off engaged. I can hear it. However, I need to finish turning the signal off manually. I am not sure if the internal spring is too weak to complete the job or if the rubber boot is too stiff and prevents the turn off from completing after the turn.
The device works. It just won't finish turning off. Again, I can hear the "automatic" turn off click and attempt to complete the turn off. But I need to manually finish the task. I can feel that the "ratchet" has been activated on the return. The problem is in the spring and/or the rubber boot.
Suggestions?

The Turn Signal Combo arrived within a week. Used the utility YouTube video to walk me through the process. Went extremely well and works great. The old one was 20 years old and had started the windshield wipers for a few swipes after the turn signal clicked off. Thanks for a good product and info on the do it yourself.
Excellent
