In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the mirror caps. This is a 2006 Ford Explorer, pretty much the same for 2006 to 2011, and you may want to do this if one of your mirror caps is broken and you need a new one from 1AAuto.com, or you may have gotten new mirrors and you want to save the old painted caps.
In behind your mirror you can kind of pull it out to the side, and there are about five or six tabs that you have to pull on. The shooting or the camera angles is not the best. I block it a little bit here, but I'm basically reaching in with my fingers and pulling on those tabs. I am pulling pretty hard, sometimes even using my thumbs to pull the tabs out while I'm pulling out on the mirror. You basically get the outside and top four or five tabs off and then you can pull the mirror down and off. Now I've gotten the top two corner ones off and I'm getting the right hand lower ones. Just pull on them and you can see the mirror glass comes loose and off.
Now with the mirror glass off, you can see there are five tabs that hold the mirror cap on. The hardest one is that one in the center there. Carefully put a screwdriver at the corner and pry out and you'll get the side tab to release. Then you want to pry it up and get the upper tabs to release. Now you need to release the middle tab. It's basically kind of getting in there with a screwdriver and prying up on the black part of the mirror. It's not the tab that's connected to the cap, it's actually the tab that is holding that in on the mirror. Pry up, pull out, and release it. Obviously, if you're not looking to save your old cap you don't have to be as careful as this. If you break a tab on the cap that you're not planning on using again then it doesn't really matter, but again we're just showing you this. This is kind of the right way to get it off without breaking it.
Now we're going with a chrome mirror cap. Put it down onto the mirror and then slide it backwards to engage the tabs. Usually the last one is that middle tab. Just push nice and firm right where it is and it goes in. Then we install the mirror glass just by pushing it right on. Here you can see the mirror with a new cap on it. The chrome is a nice look.
