The design of the Dodge Intrepid can be traced back to the Lamborghini Portofino concept car first displayed in 1987. It was from the Portofino that the Dodge Intrepid drew its distinctive "cab forward" design. Cab forward means that the passenger cabin has been pushed forward. The wheels are pushed to the far corners of the vehicle and the windshield is placed near the front axle. The result is increased passenger cabin size. The first Dodge Intrepid released was the '93 model. The first generation from 93-97 featured a touring suspension, power steering rack, antilock brakes, and an SOHC 3.5L V6. The second generation from 98-04 featured a dramatic redesign of the Dodge Intrepid exterior. Hailed as impressive and modern, the new design was roomier and more comfortable than before. The Intrepid was also outfitted with more powerful engines, in 2001 debuting on the NASCAR circuit. New Dodge Intrepid, ES, R/T, SXE, trim packages added more to the safety, comfort, and performance of the vehicle. Discontinued in 2004 due to decreased public interest, the Dodge Intrepid was replaced by the newer full size Dodge Magnum.
