Daihatsu's Short Life in the US Market
Daihatsu is the oldest car make in Japan. Its first products as Hatsudoki Seizo Co. were 6 horsepower gasoline engines, and it later developed the HA Model in 1930, which was a three-wheeled “car” that looked more like a motorcycle with a square bed attached to the end. Hatsudoki continued to develop motorized vehicles for Japan, and in 1951 changed its name to the Daihatsu Motor Co.
Daihatsu had created a few models of its own design, such as the Compagno and the Fellow, before Toyota bought a minor stake in the company in 1967. The collaboration facilitated a rapid expansion into foreign markets and helped it develop new models, such as the Delta Truck in 1971.
In 1987 Daihatsu entered the US market to capitalize on the burgeoning subcompact class. The Charade was their sole offering. First available as a three-door hatchback and later as a four-door sedan, it came in three trims with two three-cylinder engine options, maxing out at 52 horsepower. In 1990 buyers could opt for two trim levels and a three-cylinder or four-cylinder engine, depending on the options selected. For most of its life it competed with other economical cars like Geos, but priced itself well above those offerings.
From 1989-1992 Daihatsu also offered the Rocky, a 4x4 SUV with a 1.6-liter engine that could produce 94 horsepower. But in 1992, the company decided to pull out of the US due to small import numbers, lack of demand, and high price tags. Today, Daihatsu is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Toyota Motor Corporation.
