The first Chrysler LeBaron was released for the '77 model year. It was a rear wheel drive vehicle based on the Dodge Diplomat, and Chrysler's entry level vehicle. As with most Chrysler vehicles in the 80's the LeBaron featured the infamous Voice Alert System, which would produce a synthesized voice reminding drivers to strap in, or turn off the headlights. Along with the digital instrument panel, Chryslers in the 80's were considered technologically advanced. Around this time the performance LeBaron GTS was also released, powered by a turbo 2.2L engine outputting 146 hp. Eventually the LeBaron was discontinued in favor of the Chrysler Cirrus in '95. However, the LeBaron was featured in the movies and on television shows such as "Short Circuit 2," "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," and "Seinfield."
