In this video, we're going to show you how to replace this tailgate handle on this 2002 Chevy Suburban. It's the same part and similar process on these Suburban's from 2000 to 2006. The items you'll need for this includes a new tailgate handle from 1AAuto.com, a flat blade screwdriver, a 7mm and 10mm socket, a ratchet, and a pair of pliers.
Start off by lifting up your glass, and then you want to push in the center of these clips and pull them out. Do the same for the other one, but ours is broken so it just pulls out. Now, you want to pull down around this panel. You want to just keep doing this until all the clips pull free. Now lift up the glass and slide this panel forward and out.
Now, to remove this lower part of the panel, you want to remove this 7mm bolt, and we'll fast-forward as Don does that. Now, just pull that handle down and out. Now pull out around this panel to release the clips, and your tailgate panel is removed. Using your pliers, push in the tabs on this clip and just pull it out. Then pull the ball out of your door handle, and then remove these two 10mm nuts. Now carefully pry out on your tailgate handle, and just pull it out and off. It does help to push from the other side, and it's free.
On the left is the old tailgate handle; on the right is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and they'll fit exactly the same. If you want the color to match on your new tailgate handle you can go to an auto parts store with a paint department, have them match the paint to your vehicle, and then paint it to match. Push your new tailgate handle into place, then replace those two 10mm nuts. We'll just fast-forward as Don does that and tightens them up. Now push the cable back into the handle, and then pull back this clip, and push it into place.
To re-install your tailgate panel, you want to just line up the clips and then just push them into place. Now, when re-installing the top part, you want to lift up the glass. If your tailgate goes to a certain point that glass will actually close, or if you move the tailgate too much, so just be careful, watch your fingers, and don't put your head too high up so that it hits you in the head.
You want to just line up these clips and start pushing them back into place. You want to make sure you tuck this part up and over that latch before the glass closes down on it. If the glass does fall before you've got it where it need to be, you can just lift the glass up again and re-clip it up and over it. Just make sure all these clips are hit in. Then we'll fast-forward as Don replaces that pole handle and the 7mm bolt that holds it into place. Then replace these two clips. You're all set.

I have had to replace this part on my vehicle several times. This time when I took out the part it felt very good. It certainly weighed more then any of the other ones I tried like Dorman and the engineering was different as well as the materials used. So far I have had it for around a month and am still pleased every time I go into the back of my 2006 Yukon. Very pleasantly surprised. Good job 1aauto.com!!!

This tailgate handle for my 2005 Suburban 1500, doesn't work. The gap between the cable holder clip and the cable end holder, is too great, leaving too much tension on the door locking mechanism, not allowing it to unlock. I compared the new aftermarket one from 1Aauto and the old orginal handle, and there is about 1/8 of an inch difference, just enough to cause the unlock problem. I put my old OE handle back on, and everything works. This is the first problem with an item purchased from 1A, normally great service.
The install video provided me with the confidence that I could install this part without a lot of swearing. And indeed, none occurred. Was done in about 40 min. Things went just like the video. I used some rags to keep the window from closing.
Extensive inventory, haven't been able to stump them yet! Pricing is always extremely competitive! Best Part...Outstanding Tutorials!!! Very Professional and they have a video for everything.
