Mine was the same way as you just described, it should come with a small part that closes that part off, it should work great.
If a vehicle is equipped with the manual temperature control you would see the generic knob design where you adjust the temperature between hot and cold. A vehicle that is equipped with automatic temperature control will generally have a digital design that will reflect the actual temperature the vehicle is set at.
