Origin
When Chevy announced its plan to release a new line of full-size vans known as the Express (along with its sibling the GMC Savana) in 1996, it was a big deal. Okay, maybe not to the average automotive enthusiast, but the fact that the Express line would replace the venerable ChevyVan / Sportvan, its GMC G-Series twin, and their nearly archaic platform that hadn't seen an update since 1971, it was something to be excited about in a rather uneventful pocket of the automotive world. The 2500 (or three-quarter ton) version came with a 5.7L V8 with 233 ft·lb of torque or an optional 6.5L V8 turbodiesel with 385 ft·lb of torque. Buyers could also opt for an "Extended" version that bumped seating from eight or twelve up to fifteen.
Express 2500 Today
Unsurprisingly, Chevy never really tinkered with the Express. An upscale "LT" trim was released in 2001 - mainly used for the passenger versions - that allowed buyers to upgrade their amenities to a Bose sound system, full-length carpet, high trim upholstery, and more. Today, the 2500 comes with a standard 4.8L V8 or an optional 6.0L V8. In 2010, the automatic transmission was upgraded from a four speed to a six speed. The 2500, along with the other classes, received its only facelift in 2003. GM has recently stated that it will forgo further production of the 1500 in favor of the Chevy City Express. That means the 2500 will technically become the base model (although its half-ton version will still be available, albeit under a slightly different name) and will receive a corresponding facelift along with the 3500 by 2020.
