Origin
Acura automobiles first appeared in 1986 after years of research by its parent company Honda, holding the distinction of being the first Japanese automotive luxury brand. The decision proved to be a wise one as the Acura brand took off immediately. The first Acura models to be released were the Acura Legend and the Acura Integra, and sales took off. During the first few years of the brands existence, Acura was among the best-selling luxury automobile brands in the United States. Acura vehicles had all of the attributes of a Honda, including reliability, performance, and attractive styling, but with more class and elegance.
1990's
A few years after the release of the Legend and the Integra, the Acura NSX was released. The car was a hit, but afterwards, the brand hit a wall due to numerous factors, including a lack of innovative designs as well as economical factors. While market acceptance and sales were strong at the outset for Acura, the mid-to-late 1990’s were not so kind and sales slumped. However, not everything was negative for the brand during this period; Acura gained popularity with a group of young consumers known affectionately as “tuner” enthusiasts by those in the automotive world. The same tuners who had loved Honda's also picked up on Acura's and began to modify the cars to their own specifications. Acura cars also rapidly gained tremendous respect in American sport car racing, with numerous models including the Acura Integra and the Acura NSX taking several races.
2000's to the Present
After suffering through what was essentially a lost decade, the brand experienced a revival in the early 2000’s, due to much needed, drastic redesigns and the introductions of new models, including a crossover SUV in the Acura MDX, Acura RSX, Acura RDX, and the Acura TSX, amongst others. New versions of the Acura TL and Acura RL, models that had been introduced in the late 1990’s, were also released. More recent new models include the Acura ZDX and the Acura ILX.
The first Japanese luxury brand in American, Acura vehicles are highly prized, having maintained award winning quality and performance standards for over two decades. The brand has produced numerous upscale vehicles combining luxury and sport in a package most other automakers only hope to emulate, and has attained in two decades a popularity that most other brands have taken two or three times as long to accumulate. The next generation of luxury Acura automobiles will no doubt be highly anticipated.
