Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the internet. Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the tailgate handle on this 2006 Jeep Liberty, and it's the same part and process on these Liberties from 2002 to 2007. The items you'll need for this is a new tailgate handle from 1AAuto.com, a 10 mm socket and ratchet, a flat blade screwdriver or a pick, a T30 Torx bit, and a pair of pliers. First we have to remove the interior tailgate panel. Just pull out along the edges to release the clips. Once all the clips have been released you can lift the panel up and off. If a clips stay behind, use pliers to pry it out, and then it just slides right back into the panel. Now pull back your water shield. Right here is your door handle rod. Using a pick or a flat blade screwdriver, pry that clip up and off the rod, and then pull the rod out of that hole.
Right here there's a 10 mm bolt, and another one right here, and we'll just fast forward as Don removes those. Next, remove these two T30 Torx bolts. Now pull the handle out and off. On the back here you just want to pry this metal clip off, and then pry out this switch. Next, you have to transfer this bracket over to your new tailgate handle. Just remove the two T30 bolts that hold it into place. Put the bracket into place on your new handle and replace those two T30 bolts. Push the switch into place, and that metal clip that secures it. Pull the door handle back and fit it back inside the tailgate, and then replace those two 10mm bolts and those two T30 bolts. Next, put the door handle rod back into that hole, and push the clip back down onto the rod. Replace your water shield, and push your tailgate door panel back into place, and just hit each of those clips back in, and then you're all set.

Right parts, right away

1A-Auto had great instructional videos showing me how to fix my 2005 Jeep Liberty. The website is easy to use. And the parts are roughly 1/3rd the price of OEM parts from the dealer. Are they the same quality? Nope. But thanks to their installation videos I installed these parts myself in less than an hour while drinking beer. If I have to do it again, it'll be even faster. 5/5 stars. Would do again.

This handle was slightly different than our broken handle. With a little customizing we were able to make it work! It was a reasonably priced way to continue using our back hatch. Very happy with this product.

Swing gate handle replacement for the 2003 Jeep liberty
John
August 12, 2021
On the first swing gate handle I received, One of the bolts to attach the handle snapped off with not much torque applied.
One a auto promptly replaced this apparently defective item.
The replacement swing gate handle fit well. I ended up re-using the exterior seal though because I felt that it had a better fit.
Overall I was very happy with my purchase

It looked to be of decent quality out of the box. Video for swapping it out was informative. So I go to install it and the curve of the interior of the handle is not really the same of the door panel. Took a while to get the gasket to stay in place and not sure if it will hold from moisture entering underneath. Also when I go to bolt down the two 10mm nuts on the stud, it sounded like one of them busted so I would say the mounting studs/bolts are not of good quality. Wasn't even barely torqued/tightened down either. So got everything set and in place and when I go to open the handle, it opened the door but the handle remains in the open position. Tried it several times to see if it just needed to be broken in a bit and on every time it still stays in the open position. For approximately 60.00 I would at least think that there would be a bit better quality in the product. Please have customer service contact me or send me another handle to see if it wasn't just a fluke.
